State football: Jalen Suggs, SMB start fast in win over Chisago Lakes - St. Paul Pioneer Press

It took just nine seconds for Jalen Suggs to make his presence known Saturday at Centennial High School in the last remaining Class 4A state quarterfinal football game. In that span, the SMB senior returned Chisago Lakes’ bouncing opening kickoff 32 yards to the Wildcats’ 49-yard line.

Three minutes later, Suggs turned a fourth-and-19 situation into a scrambling touchdown pass to fellow senior Terry Lockett – and the defending champs were off and running to their 24th straight win – a 48-29 quarterfinal decision that sends them back to U.S. Bank Stadium and a date with Hutchinson on Thursday.

Suggs threw a second TD pass and ran in a pair of scores as the Wolfpack bolted to a 35-0 halftime lead and held off a late Wildcats surge to improve to 11-0 on the season.

“He is amazing,” SMB coach Chris Goodwin said of Suggs. “He is such a two-way threat with his running and throwing abilities.”

Suggs had plenty of offensive company in the explosive first half. In addition to Lockett, who caught four passes, Savion Robinson snared a 56-yard score, and Sanjay Redd kept the Wildcats off balance with rushing gains.

“We knew we could pass on them,” Goodwin said. “The key was to stay relaxed and execute our plays and use the clock well.”

In fact, the only thing that slowed SMB at all in the first 24 minutes was a series of penalties – five in the first quarter alone.

Chisago Lakes (5-7) earned its way into the game the hard way with high-scoring wins over No. 1 seed Cloquet and No. 2 Hermantown. The Wildcats regrouped and pecked away in the second half. Cole Peterson ran in a pair of scores. Suggs was sacked three times, once in the end zone for a safety. Wildcats quarterback Nick Wasko, a sophomore, directed an offense that ended up accumulating 419 yards, more than 200 in the third quarter alone.

However, whenever it appeared the Wildcats were going to make things really interesting, SMB would retaliate with a big play. Suggs, who completed 11 of 20 passes for 258 yards, added a third TD strike in the third quarter – a 45 yarder to Trevon Howard. In the fourth, linebacker Kaden Johnson grabbed a fumble and rumbled 65 yards for a score. As a result, the Wolfpack stayed comfortably ahead and can now look forward to a return trip to downtown Minneapolis.

“We were ready to play at the start,” Goodwin said. “In the second half, we didn’t stop their running game very well.”

That observation may have been a hint of what Goodwin and the Wolfpack may be working on in practices to ready themselves for next week. Hutchinson, also 11-0, rushed for 449 yards in its 52-14 quarterfinal win over Fridley on Friday.
