The real question everyone has about Fast and Furious 9 is whether or not Dom (Vin Diesel) will consider driving anywhere close to the speed limit. As the new trailer for the forthcoming film reminds us, Dom discovered the son he never knew he had back during the plot of The Fate of the Furious in 2017. Now, three years later, Dom’s chilling with his family, but is he ever going to stop driving fast?
Though a longer trailer is set to debut on Friday, the first footage from Fast and the Furious 9 — which is being called “Fast Family” on Twitter — is telling because there’s not a single scene of someone driving a car fast, furiously, or otherwise. Yes, Dom and his son Brian (named after Paul Walker’s character) are fixing up a car, but everybody is behaving themselves. Dom says “I’m a father now…I can’t live my life one-quarter mile at a time.” And yet, Letty (Michelle Rodriquez) waltzes in, as perhaps the worst stepmother in the world, and tells young Brian that he needs a specific necklace to protect him from “what is coming.” Bad guys? Monsters? A decade’s worth of unpaid speeding tickets?

Every parent knows this is a great way to make your kids feel safe: “Listen, honey, dangerous things are going to happen, I 100 percent am telling you this is going to happen soon, but luckily, you have this big piece of jewelry to ward off any of that stuff. Now, go to bed, your dad and I are going to drive the car really fast around our farmhouse, which isn’t a euphemism for anything because we drive fast cars in these movies, okay?”
In other words, the trailer doesn’t tell us much other than just like Fate of the Furious the next installment of the franchise will almost certainly make us worried about Dom’s son (again). But this time, it seems unlikely that Jason Statham will be there with noise-canceling headphones to help out. Will it work? We’ll see.
Thanks for the feedback!
The Fast franchise certainly needs a dose of Vin Diesel to jumpstart it again after the so-so attempt at a spin-off with Hobbs and Shaw. But let’s just hope that in all of this parental soul-searching, the franchise doesn’t forget to give us the escapist fantasy of driving cars really fast with very few consequences. In other words, Dad Diesel is great. Let’s just not make him too much like a real dad. Some cheesy movie heroes need to break the speed limit.
Fast & Furious 9 will be out on May 22, 2020.
