Aging fleet, fast-falling snow make storm ‘really difficult’ for Syracuse plows - syracuse.com

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- As snow falls at a furious rate, Syracuse’s operations director asked people to be patient while plow crews battle a “really difficult storm” using outdated equipment.

Operations Director Corey Driscoll Dunham said plow drivers, mechanics and supervisors worked through the night Thursday and will continue around the clock through most of this weekend to clear the city’s streets.

“Hopefully it starts to slow down soon,” Dunham said. “We’re asking people to really be patient.”

The city is grappling with the worst storm of what’s been a mild winter so far. And public works crews are operating with aging equipment that breaks down often.

Of the department’s 24 plows, 17 are on the road today, according to Dunham. Several broke down overnight and mechanics are working to get them operable again.

Officials are working on updating the city’s worn fleet and hope to have a series of new trucks on the road by next winter. DPW Commissioner Jeremy Robinson told city councilors last month that the age of his fleet makes it hard to keep up with big storms. The average plow is 10 years old, and nearly half are more than 13 years old, he said.

The council approved borrowing $1.1 million to buy 10 new plows and three pickup trucks to be on the road next winter. The New York State Thruway Authority also loaned the city two plows to use for the rest of the season. One of those is already on the road.

Dunham today asked Syracuse residents to be patient, especially in the neighborhoods. Emergency routes and rush hour routes are the city’s first priority, she said, and it sometimes takes longer to get to smaller streets.

“It’s getting tough to keep up,” Dunham said. “The snow’s just falling really fast. Hopefully we’ll get a break tomorrow. Everybody’s doing everything we can with the aging fleet to keep the roads clear."

Dunham also asked people to be mindful not to dump snow in the street when plowing or snowblowing driveways or sidewalks.

“That kind of defeats the purpose,” she said.
