Starting fast.
It’s what every NFL offense preaches. And the Detroit Lions have started fast this season. They have scored seven of the past eight times they’ve touched the ball in the first quarter and they have taken double-digit leads in their past two games.
And yet — it’s been a struggle.
The Lions have eked out three-point wins against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Philadelphia Eagles. And they’ve lost their past two games.
Lions receiver Kenny Golladay doesn’t see a problem with the offense. At least not with the way it’s starting.
“Pretty much just do what we’re doing,” he said of the plan moving forward. “But the big part about it is just finishing the game. You can start fast all you want. If you’re not finishing the game, all that doesn’t really matter.”
The Lions face one of the NFL’s top defenses Sunday when they host the Minnesota Vikings. Find just about any defensive statistic and the Vikings are near the top.
But Golladay isn’t too concerned about the Vikings or any opposing defenses.

“I want to say it’s just us. It’s on us,” he said. “Everybody’s just got to do their part. We can’t really just put it on other teams.
“Of course teams are going to make adjustments. We make adjustments. But at the same time, we’ve just got to execute the plays.”
While the common refrain in the NFL is the that this week’s game is important simply because it’s the next one, Golladay knows where the Lions stand and he concedes that a division game at home might carry a tad more weight.
“This is for sure an important game,” he said. “It’s a division game and it’s at home. We’re already 0-1 in the division so far, so we at least want to be 1-1 after Sunday.”
But that’s as far as Golladay’s concern goes. He’s not interested in the Lions making a statement.
‘To be honest,” he said, ‘I don’t feel like we need to prove ourselves to anyone. We’ve just got to go out there and play our style of football.”
While the offense has looked better under coordinator Darrell Bevell, the Lions know more can be done, and it starts with doing things the right way.
“Well, we can’t be doing enough if we’re not winning,” Golladay said. “So we’ve got to do more. We’ve just got to get better at details each and every week, lock in on our details and when it comes to down (games), we’re 100% on the details.”
