WEST LAFAYETTE – Five days after struggling to score in its closed scrimmage against Providence, the Purdue basketball team had no such problems Friday night.
Of course, the competition was different. The Friars are part of the rugged Big East and often bring a high level of defensive intensity. Southern Indiana, which was Friday’s opponent, is an NCAA Division II school and had trouble keeping up with the Boilermakers.
Still, the offense was efficient and crisp throughout most of 88-59 victory over Eagles at Mackey Arena. It’s the final tune-up for Purdue before Wednesday’s season opener against Green Bay at Mackey Arena.
Former McCutcheon standout Darnell Butler, who was in the starting lineup for Southern Indiana, had five points and three rebounds.
Here are three observations:
FLUID OFFENSE
The Boilermakers hit 9 of their first 10 field goals and made 18 of 23 in the first half in building a 33-point halftime advantage. That’s 78.9 percent, which includes 6 of 9 from 3-point range. Purdue was 5 of 23 from the field against Providence.
Aaron Wheeler, Eric Hunter, Jr. and Sasha Stefanovic each drained 3-pointers before the first media timeout and the Boilermakers were off and running. Purdue also had 18 points in the first five minutes, capped by a nice pull-up jumper from Hunter.
Wheeler found his shooting touch to spark the offense. He made his first five attempts – before a tip-in didn’t fall in the second half – and was 4 of 4 from 3-point range and finished with 17 points.
The Boilermakers played at a fast pace throughout most of the first half.
"That's the player that I am - I try to get up and down the floor," Wheeler said. "Our point guards did a good job of pushing the ball and I was running the floor with them and they found me a little bit."
Matt Haarms added 16 points and Trevion Williams hit all four of his attempts and finished with 10 points.
The Boilermakers cooled off in the second half as coach Matt Painter rotated different lineups. Purdue shot 57.7 percent for the game.
BALL MOVEMENT
Was solid on the perimeter but lacking trying to feed the posts.
Purdue swung the ball from side-to-side with crisp passes, moving the defense and was rewarded with open looks from Wheeler, Stefanovic and Jahaad Proctor. The Boilermakers had assists on six of their first seven baskets and finished the first half with 13 on 18 made field goals.
"What we initially tried to do was play inside-out and just play fast," Hunter said. "Playing inside-out opens things up for Aaron and for us to just shoot the ball."
Eight turnovers left a mark on the otherwise solid first half with a handful of those mistakes trying to push the ball inside. In the second half, freshman Mason Gillis executed a nice lob pass to Matt Haarms, who converted the layup.
REBOUNDING
The Boilermakers were able to get into their offense quick because they controlled the rebounding from the opening tip.
They limited the Eagles’ second-chance opportunities by crashing the defensive boards. At halftime, Purdue held a 20-6 edge and Southern Indiana managed three offensive rebounds, despite shooting 28 percent from the field. Overall, the Boilermakers won the rebounding battle 39-22.
