Najee Harris’s Fast Start Keys Alabama Win - 247Sports

What team or player doesn’t want to get off to a fast start? Alabama tailback Najee Harris certainly did that in the Crimson Tide’s 38-7 victory over Mississippi State in Starkville Saturday. Harris became the first Crimson Tide player in storied Bama history to score three touchdowns in the first quarter of a game.

Harris, a 6-2, 230-pound junior from Antioch, Calif., went in on a 10-yard run on Bama’s first possession and had a 5-yard run shortly before the end of the first quarter. In between, Harris took a pass from Tua Tagovailoa for a 19-yard touchdown play.

But wait! There’s more!

The receiving touchdown was his sixth of the year, the Alabama single season record for receiving touchdowns by a running back.

Harris added a fourth touchdown on a 5-yard rush in the second quarter as Bama led by 35-7 going to intermission.

Having accomplished the feat of scoring both rushing and receiving touchdowns both in last week’s game against LSU and Saturday at Mississippi State, Harris became the first Alabama player since Mark Ingram in 2009 to record rushing and receiving TDs in back-to-back games.

He had 17 carries for 88 yards and 3 receptions for 51 yards against the Bulldogs.

Harris leads Alabama in rushing this season with 144 carries for 876 yards (6.1 yards per carry) and 9 touchdowns and 22 pass receptions for 266 yards and 6 TDs.

So didn’t he feel good about his performance?

“I’m just hurt about our quarterback,” he said. [Tua Tagovailoa left the game just before halftime after suffering a hip injury.]

“I’m not in the mood to answer questions to be honest,” he said. “I’m not trying to be rude to anybody. I’m just not in the mood right now.”

Prior to Harris’s comments, Alabama Coach Nick Saban said, “Najee has played very well for us. He played great last week, he played really well today. I think he’s gained confidence all year long. The more he plays, the more success he has.

“He runs the plays very efficiently and effectively. He’s a hard guy to tackle. He’s a real good receiver, and he’s done a really, really good job. I’m really pleased with the way he’s played the last couple of weeks.”

Harris wasn’t in a mood to accept the compliment from his head coach, either. “We’ll see in film [study],” he said. I’m doing all right. I have a lot of stuff to work on still. I made a couple of mistakes out there.”

While the injury to Tagovailoa is the most significant from the game to the team, teammates, coaches, ,and fans, there were a number of players down on both teams. Harris said it wasn’t because it was a particularly hard-hitting game. “It’s just the wear and tear of the season,” he said. “It’s about that time where people go down with injuries.”

Harris has been adamant that he has always had football skills. “It’s just more opportunities to see how fast the game is and see things. It’s more comfortable.

Nanee and his teammates will be back in action next Saturday when the Tide hosts Western Carolina in Alabama’s final game of the season in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
