Oregon State starts fast, holds on to beat Arizona 56-38: Game at a glance - OregonLive

TUCSON, Ariz. — Oregon State, buoyed by a spectacular offensive first half, held on to beat the Arizona Wildcats 56-38 Saturday afternoon at Arizona Stadium.

The Beavers struck for 385 yards and 35 points during the first half, then repelled a second-half surge by Arizona and freshman quarterback Grant Gunnell to post a season high for points and win their fourth game of the season.

Oregon State (4-4, 3-2 Pac-12) is .500 in November for the first time since 2013. The Beavers also won their third road game of 2019, the most since 2013. OSU’s 56 points were its most since 2012.

The Beavers return home to Reser Stadium this Friday to play Washington at 7:30 p.m.

Here is a recap:

TOP PERFORMANCES

Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton led the Beavers on seven scoring drives of at least 65 yards. Luton completed 20 of 26 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns.

Isaiah Hodgins, despite briefly leaving the game with a knee injury, posted his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season, catching seven passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns.

Artavis Pierce had his third 100-yard game of the season, running 15 times for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Jermar Jefferson, playing for the first time in a month, ran for 105 yards and touchdowns of 1, 5 and 5 yards.

Hamilcar Rashed Jr. had two first-half sacks and a third late in the fourth quarter, increasing his Pac-12 season-leading total to 12 and tying Oregon State’s single-season record.

For Arizona, freshman quarterback Grant Gunnell finished 19 of 29 for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

KEY STAT: Oregon State scored 35 points in a half for the first time since the Beavers had 35 in the 2015 Civil War (second half). During OSU’s first half, the Beavers scored on drives of 75, 75, 75, 75 and 92 yards. Oregon State accumulated 385 yards, averaging 9.0 yards per play.

KEY PLAY: During a first half full of big plays, maybe it’s Artavis Pierce’s 25-yard run on first and 10 from the OSU 8 just before halftime. Backed up against the goal line with a minute to play, the Beavers were in a position to run out the clock. Instead, Pierce’s run gave the Beavers an opportunity. Six plays later, OSU was in the end zone for a 35-19 halftime lead.

WORTH NOTING: Oregon State scored 28 points during the second quarter, six points short of the school record for a single quarter. The Beavers had a 34-point quarter during a 1983 game against Portland State.

IT WAS OVER WHEN: Luton found Hodgins for a 25-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter that put the Beavers up 18 points, at 49-31.

OSU INJURY REPORT: The big one was Isaiah Hodgins, who sustained a right knee injury following a second-quarter catch. He went to the locker room, but returned to start the second half. Inside linebacker Shemar Smith (ankle) made the trip but did not dress. Smith started the first seven games this season. Receiver Kolby Taylor sustained a calf injury during warmups and did not play. Cornerback Nahshon Wright (lower leg) left the game on the first play.
