Zoomers are changing work for the better—whether it wants to be changed or not. Is your workplace ready?
Gen Z is…different. But I didn’t realize just how different until I got a call from a friend whose daughter had applied for a job at a company where I led global recruiting. She told me her daughter was in tears. That she had applied and hadn’t heard anything back and was simply crushed that she didn’t get the job.
I was confused. Her resume wasn’t even in my tracking system yet. I asked when she had applied.
The answer?
25 minutes. That’s all. But it was long enough for her to assume she had been rejected.
My company had failed to meet her expectations. It was both embarrassing and enlightening. We had to do better. Gen Z demands it—in the hiring process and beyond.
As we go into the final hiring push of 2019, casting our nets for the top crop of interns and entry-level candidates, here are a few things you can do to create a more Gen Z-friendly workplace.
Communicate, communicate, communicate
Gen Z has been painted with a broad brush—that they spend all their time texting and don’t know how to have a face-to-face conversation.
Guess what? It’s a myth.
A new survey found that despite—or perhaps because of—being raised side-by-side with their phones, 83% of respondents preferred to communicate with their managers in person. Contrast that with managers, 82% of whom assumed that their Gen Z reports preferred instant message.
That is a massive disconnect. Yes, they expect a quick response, but they also crave personal interaction.
So the next time you interview a remote candidate, use a video meeting interface. Better yet, find a way to meet face to face. Gen Z candidates do their research and want to be sure they connect with their potential manager.
Once they’re hired, set up a consistent communication cadence, and make it clear that you’re open to chatting by phone or video outside of anything on the calendar.
Listen, listen, listen (and act)
Your biggest source of inspiration and innovation can come from this new generation of employees. It’s your job to listen. But too many employers don’t ask for input or, just as bad, ask for input but don’t do anything to affect change.
Address this by actively soliciting feedback and dispersing those ideas to teams that can bring them to life.
If Gen Z workers see you listening and taking their input seriously, they’ll bring their best selves to work every day. If you don’t, they’re going somewhere their voices will be heard, respected—and acted upon.
Simplify, simplify, simplify
Gen Z expects technology to be easy. 69% believe that, when it comes to using technology in the workplace, work life should be just as easy as home life. And the stakes are high—Gen Z won’t stick around a workplace that makes it difficult to actually get work done.
But before you dive headfirst into a process overhaul, take a step back. Avoid overwhelming employees by throwing new technology at them willy-nilly.
Now is the time to thoughtfully develop and implement digital workflows that free people achieve peak performance. How? By putting employees front and center. Learning how they work and what they want. Mapping out every step of their journey before you start to build.
By simplifying, optimizing, and communicating—not just about what you’re doing, but why—you can design a new way of working that will satisfy Gen Z and support productivity.
For Boomers and Zoomers (and everyone in between)
Gen Z is changing the workplace for the better, whether it wants to be changed or not.
The good news is that what’s good for Gen Z is good for everyone. Who doesn’t want to have meaningful communication, feel their feedback is valued, and be given simple, easy-to-use tools that make getting work done a breeze?
The difference is that the older generations will put up with what they’re already accustomed to. Generation Z? Not so much.
Don’t take my word for it. Take theirs. Here’s a great interview of three Gen Z employees sharing insights into what works—and what needs work—in the workplace. And if you’re ready to make your workplace more Gen Z friendly, here’s an employee experience platform that can help you live up to their expectations
