Advanced Micro Devices (ticker: AMD) CEO Lisa Su today unveiled new high-performance microprocessors that could threaten Intel (INTC) in the laptop processor market. AMD made the announcement at a press conference at the Mandalay Bay conference center ahead of this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
AMD has made a big push on its cutting-edge 7 nm process technology parts, which are ahead of Intel’s 10 nm technology. Su said AMD has more than 20 processors in the market or in development for the desktop, workstation, graphics, and data center categories. The addition to fast new laptop processors fills an obvious soft spot in AMD’s lineup.
Su announced several entrants in the new AMD Ryzen 4000 mobile processor series, which AMD says are the first 7 nm x86 compatible processors. The new 8-core chips are specifically targeting ultrathin laptops in three categories: consumers, gamers and creators, and professionals. In the consumer category, the latest component is called the 4800u. AMD claims the processor offers better performance than rival Intel parts for creative tasks like design and video editing. AMD said the first laptops with the processor will ship in the first quarter, with more than 100 new systems over the course of 2020. The company also unveiled the 4800h, a processor targeted gaming and creator applications that it likewise says offers significant performance improvement over comparable Intel parts.
AMD also unveiled a new high-end desktop processor called the 3990x, a 64 core processor that the company claims can handle image rendering 30% faster than a pair of Intel’s Xeon 8280 server chips. The 3990x will be priced at $3,990 and start shipping next month.
“We are kicking off 2020 with a bang, bringing unmatched performance, graphics, and longer battery life to ultrathin and gaming laptop users with the new AMD Ryzen 4000 Series Mobile Processors,” Saeid Moshkelani, senior vice president and general manager, AMD Client Compute, said in a statement. “We saw historic portfolio growth for AMD Ryzen Mobile-powered systems in 2019, and we are already on track to bring wider system adoption of AMD Ryzen 4000 Series Mobile Processors in 2020 from major OEM partners, offering twice the power-efficiency from the previous generation.”
AMD in late trading is up fractionally at $48.44.
