‘Fast and Furious’ on S.I. Expressway? Man accused of driving more than 100 mph - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In a scene worthy of the “The Fast and the Furious” movie franchise, a 22-year-old man tailgated and nearly collided with other cars as he drove at more than 100 mph in the HOV lane of the Staten Island Expressway, authorities allege.

Marks Samsonovs of Brooklyn was driving a 2019 green Dodge Charger so fast early Wednesday morning that sparks flew when the tail pipe hit a dip in the road, and a police officer had to drive at more than 120 mph to catch up with the vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.

The suspect “did cause multiple vehicles to abruptly and suddenly [brake] to avoid collision,” the complaint says.

The Dodge allegedly had an illegal dark tint on the windshield and lacked a front license plate.

However, Samsonovs did have a legal right to be in the HOV lane since there were three passengers in the car, police said.

Samsonovs, who lives on the 4700 block of Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, was driving westbound on the expressway when he was pulled over at 12:22 a.m., according to the complaint and police.

Despite a posted speed limit of 50 mph, Samsonovs allegedly traveled at more than 100 mph for about two miles.

He was speeding in the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane with his vehicle less than a car length behind another vehicle, police said.

The Dodge didn’t signal as it crossed over double-white lines separating the HOV lane in order to pass the vehicle, and it nearly collided with another vehicle that happened to be traveling in the left lane, as Samsonovs overtook the vehicle in front of his car, according to the complaint.

Without signaling, he allegedly crossed over the double white lines again as he reentered the HOV lane and tailgated another vehicle.

Samsonovs “did pass a dip on the road which caused said vehicle’s tail pipe to scrape the road causing sparks to emanate from the rear of said motor vehicle," the complaint states.

Samsonovs also engaged "in conduct which created a grave risk of death to another person, under circumstances evincing a depraved indifference to human life,” the complaint continues.

The suspect, whose bond is set at $10,000, is due back in Criminal Court on Monday, according to public records.

He has been charged with reckless endangerment and multiple violations including reckless driving, exceeding the maximum speed limit, disobeying traffic control devices, not signaling when changing lanes, having equipment and license-plate infractions and following too close.

An attorney for the defendant did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
