EAST LANSING, MI – Michigan’s new purple, kettle-cooked potato chips sold out fast but don’t worry, more are coming in 2020.
For those who missed out on the first run of Great Lakes Potato Chip Co.’s purple chips, you should know they taste just like the traditional yellow-ish varieties – but the color sure is fun, the Associated Press reports.
It took Michigan State University researchers 20 years to develop the blackberry potato that gave us these vibrant chips, the report said. The potatoes are high in antioxidants and disease resistant.
Previous varieties of purple potatoes were susceptible to disease and didn’t have the deep purple color these do, said Dave Douches, director for the MSU Potato Breeding and Genetics program.
The Traverse City-based chip company made about 4,500 packets of the purple chips to celebrate its 10th anniversary. They were gone quickly, said Chris Girrbach, Great Lakes Chip Co. president. They were available online and at stores in the Traverse City area, on MSU’s campus, and locations in Ann Arbor and Detroit.
"I didn't think it would catch on this quick, but I knew it would be a great idea," Girrbach said.
Iott Farms in Kalkaska grow and harvest the blackberry potatoes, the report said. About 6,000 pounds of them were made into chips for the first run, Girrbach said.
Visit the chip company’s website to sign up to receive an alert when the purple chips are available again.
