Everything started out so easily for Grand Forks Red River on Friday.
The Roughriders jumped to a 13-0 lead against the visiting Fargo South High School girls basketball team. Red River was efficient on offense, scoring on five of its first eight possessions. The Rider defense forced five turnovers in building the quick 13-point lead.
“We made shots right away,’’ Red River coach Kent Ripplinger said. “But we had a tough time scoring after that. We struggled to put the ball in the basket.’’
Red River relied on its defense the rest of the way to hold onto a 46-35 win against the Bruins.
The Roughriders finished shooting just 26.9 percent (14-of-52) from the field. But Red River held South to 20 percent shooting (12-of-60). The Bruins’ 35 points were the fewest Red River has allowed in a game this season.
“We had a lot of close shots that we weren’t putting in,’’ Ripplinger said. “We haven’t struggled shooting this season, not like we did tonight.’’
Five free throws by Shelby Frank led the way in the 13-0 start. Red River built its lead to as much as 26-9 before South closed the first half on a 7-0 run in the final 2:16 to pull within 26-16.
The Bruins cut the deficit to eight points on four occasions in the second half, the last time at 32-24 on an Adie Wagner 3-point basket with 10:11 remaining.
But Alex Page drove the left wing for a layup 20 seconds later to start a Red River 7-0 run. Kaylee Lancaster followed with a trey from the left wing and Jocelyn Schiller scored on a layup for a 39-24 Riders lead with 7:55 left.
“That was a key spot, extending the lead back to 15,’’ Ripplinger said. “We needed to get a cushion. I felt good at that point. Our halfcourt defense was good. We were getting out and guarding the people we needed to.’’
South got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
“Both teams were scrappy on defense,’’ Bruins coach Jason Smedshammer said. “That made it hard to do things offensively. And we’ve had a tough time putting the ball in the basket all year.
Claire Leach scored 12 points and Frank 11 to lead Red River. The Roughriders, playing for the third time in four days, improved to 3-2.
Wagner and Brynn Nelson each had 10 points to pace South, which dropped to 0-4.
