Notebook: A&M hoops uses fast start to blow by Vanderbilt - 247Sports

Texas A&M controlled from start to finish en route to a 69-50 victory over Vanderbilt Saturday night at Memorial Gymnasium as the Aggies won for the fifth time in six games. Here are a few takeaways from the victory.

Fast start propels Texas A&M

Texas A&M scored 19 points in the first half against Ole Miss, but on Saturday it was a completely different story. It took the Aggies just over nine minutes into the game to surpass that number with freshman guard Andre Gordon breaking down the defense before finding fellow freshman Yavuz Gultekin for an open layup. A&M went on to score 36 points in the half, while shooting over 53 percent from the field. The Aggies continued to roll in the second half once again shooting over 51 percent from the field while scoring 31 points. A&M’s 69 points marked its highest points output since a 77-point showing against Northwestern State in the season opener.

A&M continues to make strides in turnover department

For the second straight game, Texas A&M did a really good job protecting the ball finishing with just 12 turnovers. The Commodores scored just seven points off turnovers and were able to muster just 11 second chance points as A&M excelled at not allowing anything easy. The Aggies have found themselves on the wrong side of the turnover column frequently this season, but Saturday marked a different story with the Aggies capitalizing off 14 Vanderbilt turnovers with 16 points off those turnovers to go along with 16 second chance points.

Controlling the paint

40 of A&M’s 69 points came inside the paint but it might come as a surprise how the Aggies accomplished it with senior forward Josh Nebo accounting for just four field goal attempts. Instead many of those points came off A&M’s guards breaking down Vanderbilt’s man defense off the dribble leading to easy baskets. A&M did a good job on the other end as well limiting the Commodores to just 18 points in the paint.

Dominant defensive performance

Texas A&M has played well most of the year defensively but has taken another step forward the last few games holding a second straight opponent to 50 or fewer points. Just how dominant was A&M? The Aggies limited the Commodores to just 25 points over the first 30 minutes of the game while opening a 31-point lead. Vanderbilt, playing without its leading scorer Aaron Nesmith, struggled to muster much, especially from outside where the Commodores shot just 5-of-30 from 3-point territory. The sophomore forward entered the game shooting over 52 percent from behind the 3-point line but will be sidelined indefinitely, due to a foot injury.
Andre Gordon impresses on road game

After an impressive SEC debut on the road against Arkansas, Gordon followed that up a week later once again matching his career-high with 15 points and two assists. What was encouraging and impressive about Gordon’s performance was the manner in which he controlled the game and showed an ability to break down the defense. The four turnovers from Gordon are still an area in which he can improve, but his ability to break down the defense was a major asset.
