Playing Fast: Rhett Lashlee shares his offensive philosophy - 247Sports

New offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is looking to bring an identity to the Miami Hurricanes’ offense.

Lashlee’s offense is built on two principles: play fast and keep it simple.

“I believe in spreading the ball, getting your playmakers in space, and playing fast,” Lashlee said on The Joe Rose Show on 560 The Joe on Friday morning. “Ultimately, that is what kids want to do. They love it and if they are doing what they want to do, they will buy in just a little bit more.

“We want to play fast and we want to be physical. Just because we are spreading the ball around, we don’t want to give any illusion that we are a finesse team. We want to be a physical team. You have to be able to run and throw the football to win in college football.”

That philosophy led to plenty of success at SMU in 2019.

The Mustangs averaged 41.8 points per game, which ranked seventh in the country and SMU averaged 489 yards of total offense per game.

SMU played at a fast tempo as they averaged 80 plays per game, which ranked as the third most in the country.

Lashlee’s offense in 2019 was not only fast, it was also explosive. The Mustangs had 50 plays that went for at least 30 yards. Only two schools—UCF and Oklahoma—had more plays of 30 yards or more.

The Mustangs were also fairly efficient in 2019. The Mustangs finished the 2019 season ranked 30th in the country in third down conversion percentage at 43.9 percent.

“At the end of the day, the more plays you get, the more times your playmakers get a chance to touch the ball and the more chances you get to score,” Lashlee said. “Then hopefully we can wear down our opponents because it is something we are used to and then we can spread the ball and get them the ball in space and let them do what God has given them the ability to do.”

Lashlee, who is a Gus Malzahn protege, admitted that his offense is a simple offense that isn’t hard for players to learn.

“The thing we take pride in with our system is that it is a player friendly system,” Lashlee said. “It is not complicated. We are not trying to go out there and make it complicated. Not only do we want to play fast with tempo, we want to have our players play fast—have them reacting and not thinking. When kids are reacting, their abilities are taking over. When they are thinking, they are hesitant and slow. Our system is designed to be simple for the guys on our team, but it will be complex to the defense. We want to give the defense a lot of problems. We want to dictate to them and put pressure on the defense.”

Lashlee understands the foundation of any good offense is execution and that will be a key factor to work on during the offseason.

“Everything is built on execution,” Lashlee said. "You can’t go fast if you don’t execute. If you are taking sacks and negative plays, you aren’t going to go very fast. It sounds good to say we want to play fast, but there is a lot that goes into that. We have to execute and that comes with discipline and repetition. I do think success breeds confidence and confidence allows you to be successful on third down and clutch moments in the red-zone. To be successful, you have to get guys bought into having an identity and they have to know who we are and create good habits so they can execute when the pressure is on.”

One of the areas Lashlee will need to address at Miami is handling a porous offensive line. The Hurricanes ranked 127th in the country in sacks allowed in 2019.

"People are going to blitz, well I like it when people blitz because it gives you an opportunity for big plays," Lashlee said. "With our system, we are in the shotgun 90 percent of the time, but we are not trying to hold the ball forever. The longer you hold the ball, the more sacks you have and more bad things happen."

Miami’s offense was one of the least productive Power Five attacks in the country in 2019.

The Hurricanes ranked 98th in the country in total offense at 367 yards per game UM ranked 90th in the country in scoring offense at 25.7points per game.

UM ranked 129th in the country in third down conversion offense at 27.2 percent.
