Run a Google search on Fast and Furiousand one of the topics that comes up is how many movies there are and how many more there will be. At this point, the franchise is up to nine films and one spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw. The ninth F&F movie is set to be released in May 2020 and just when you thought you were up to date on the franchise’s counts, there’s another entry joining the fast-driving crew.
Netflix launching animated ‘Fast and Furious’ series
The billion-dollar franchise has inspired a new set of stories for Netflix’s Fast& Furious: Spy Racers, an animated series based on Vin Diesel’s character. Dom will go back to his youth thanks to a collaboration between Netflix, Universal Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation.
The news was first shared during the summer, but now the plot and cast information has been revealed. Per the press release:
“Teenager Tony Toretto follows in the footsteps of his cousin Dom when he and his friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination.”
Diesel is serving as an executive producer alongside Tim Hedrick (Avatar: Last Airbender, Voltron Legendary Defender), Neal H. Moritz (Fast and Furious), Chris Morgan (Fast and Furious), and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien). Check out the first look pictures shared by DreamWorks on Instagram:
Who’s in the cast
You won’t see Jason Statham or Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson popping up in this incarnation of the series, but Diesel is on deck to play Dominic. Yes, Diesel’s husky voice is set to animate a teenage version of Dom. Tyler Posey stars as Dom’s cousin, Tony Toretto, and Diesel’s daughter, Similce, plays the younger sister of a character named Frostee. Netflix laid out the rest of the main cast in its media release:
“Camille Ramsey (American Vandal) as Layla Gray, a notable underground racer who works for SH1FT3R, Luke Youngblood (Harry Potter) as Frostee Benson, a 13-year old tech genius; Charlet Chung (Overwatch) as Echo, a master artist and natural spy; Jorge Diaz (Jane the Virgin) as Cisco Renaldo, both the muscle and the sweetheart of the crew; and Manish Dayal (The Resident) as Shashi Dhar, the leader of the criminal organization SH1FT3R.”
The series will also feature guest voicework from Grey Griffin, Kevin Michael Richardson, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and others.
When does the show air on Netflix?
Fast& Furious: Spy Racers will drop on Netflix on Dec. 26, just in time for your holiday break binge-watching spree. Though it’s categorized as a kids’ TV series, there’s a chance adults will love it just as much as they love The Dragon Prince and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
Set the reminder feature on your Netflix accounts so you can check out the debut, because the show looks like it will be just as action-packed as the movies.
While this new cartoon series may tide fans over until Fast & Furious 9 comes out next May, Vin Diesel lovers can catch him next in the superhero tale, Bloodshot, in February 2020.
